Top 10 Must-Have Freediving Accessories

These are the 10 must-have items that you would never think of bringing.

The great thing about freediving is that you can literally do it without the assistance of any equipment at all. However, there are a number of accessories and gadgets that you can bring along with you that can enhance your experience and make it much more enjoyable. In this article, we take a look at a few accessories that can take your freediving experience to the next level.

YAMAHA Explorer Seascooter –

Muscle fatigue and overall exhaustion are some of the limiting factors of freediving. Eventually, everyone gets tired and you have to conclude your freediving excursion. But what if you had a machine that did the work for you? Enter the YAMAHA Seascooter. This battery-powered device is designed to propel you through the water at speeds up to 2.5 miles per hour. Granted, this isn’t exactly a “wild ride” but it does make for leisurely propulsion through the water down to depths of 30 feet. It is an extremely compact design so you can easily transport it to and from the water. Additionally, it provides up to 1 hour of battery life.

Blue Fire Super Bright 1000LM Safety Light –

One thing is certain about underwater exploration: There is plenty of darkness. Not only can the water get murky in some areas, but there are also underwater rock formations and structures that you will likely want to explore. That is why a good diving flashlight is a good thing to have. If you are planning on doing any freediving, you would be wise to have this little flashlight on hand. This flashlight is built to withstand depths of up to 150 meters (492 feet) and the beam can cut through the darkness in areas where you need it most. This flashlight can also double for usage on camping and hiking trips or just general use around the house. Also, the rechargeable battery makes this device extremely convenient.

Merlin Light Soft Goodman Glove –

Although many flashlights come with a lanyard to help to keep them attached to the diver’s body, a dangling flashlight can be a nuisance and it can negatively impact your ability to effectively swim. That is why many freedivers get this product. You can strap your light to your arm and not suffer the annoyance of a loosely dangling flashlight. You still have free use of your hand and yet anywhere you point will be illuminated. It really is a convenience that a freediver cannot go without.

DarkFin Webbed Power Swimming Gloves –

As a freediver, you are probably already improving your swimming speed with the use of diving fins. Why not complete your aquatic evolution by going full duck-mode and slapping on a pair of these webbed gloves. You can maintain the dexterity in your fingers and, when its time to swim, the webbed gloves help you displace greater amounts of water as you paddle which means you’ll swill a lot faster. These “handy” little items can also be used for spearfishing and for resistance training in the water or water aerobics.

Promate Scuba Dive Underwater Writing Slate –

We’ve mentioned numerous times throughout other articles on this site that the best practice for freediving is to always have a dive buddy nearby so you can look out for one another. However, it isn’t enough to just watch each other. You have to communicate with each other. This is where this writing slate comes in. You can handwrite messages to each other while submerged underwater. This way you can clearly communicate and concerns or dangers that you are seeing while diving.

Mares Magnetic Shaker Diving Communication Device –

Another convenient means of communicating with other divers while underwater is this device. There is a magnet located on each end of the tube and a ball bearing is located between them. As you shake the tube, the ball bearing moves along its length which creates a high pitch sound underwater. You can easily signal to your dive buddy and other divers when need be.

OCTOMASK (Compatible with GoPro) –

If you plan on freediving in a location that has beautiful scenery and aquatic life, you would be wise to capture such a memorable moment on video. This mask is compatible with all GoPro models and the silicone skirt makes for optimal comfort while offering a great fit. The aluminum thumb screw mechanism makes attaching and removing your GoPro extremely convenient.

Oceanic F-10 Free-Diving Watch V3 –

This handy little device is perfect for the frequent freediver who needs to keep track of their elapsed dive times, ambient temperature and depth intervals. You’ll be able to precisely track the duration of your breath holds and you can set alarms to alert you when you need to begin your ascent to the surface. This is truly a safety precaution that every freediver must take advantage of.

Samatree F1 Waterproof Floating Carbon Fiber Hand Grip for GoPro Hero –

The two most important things when filming your freedives with a GoPro are your ability to hold onto your GoPro without dropping it and the ability to find your GoPro even if you do drop it. This device takes care of both of these issues. You can strap your GoPro to this rod and have instant control over your camera angles and recording capabilities. Additionally, the rod is buoyant so if you ever manage to drop it, the rod (and your GoPro) will float to the surface where they can be easily retrieved.

Subwing Towable Watersports Board –

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to fly? Well, now you can… underwater. If you are going to be freediving off the edge of a boat, there is no reason that you cant have the boat do a little of the work for you. By attaching this device to the back of your boat via a rope or cord and allowing your boat to pull you along, you can manipulate your body as your pulled through the water which can result in some really fun underwater acrobatic tricks.
